Abstract
With the advancement of globalization, the translation of literary works has taken on an important role in promoting cultural exchange. A Tale of Two Cities, as a world classic, employs a variety of rhetorical devices to depict the social contradictions and character images of its time. This paper aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the Chinese versions by Luo Jinan and Song Zhaolin, exploring their translation strategies for major rhetorical devices in A Tale of Two Cities. The study employs textual analysis method, focusing on the two translators’ handling of main rhetorical devices such as parallelism and metaphor. The results show that Luo Jinan tends to use a foreignization strategy in the translation process, striving for fidelity to the original text through literal and word-for-word translation, reflecting the principle of source language culture; while Song Zhaolin prefers a domestication strategy, using flexible methods such as adaptation and calque to translate into a language more readily accepted by the target language readers, emphasizing the principle of target language culture. By comparing the two translation strategies. This paper reveals the impact of cultural differences in the translation process and how different strategies affect reader comprehension, providing new perspectives and insights for future translation studies.
